Spaces & Objects designed an exhibition layout for the city of Dendermonde, dedicated to Franz Courtens, the city’s most renowned painter. Celebrated for his impressive landscapes, Courtens captured the Dendermonde countryside in masterful paintings during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The exhibition concept draws inspiration from these landscapes, offering visitors a unique and immersive spatial experience. The exhibition invites visitors to stroll through an abstract landscape, discovering Courtens’ paintings step by step. The layout creates a natural dialogue between the artworks and their surroundings, evoking the sensation of walking through the painted landscapes. To address the architectural constraints of the exhibition space, a self-supporting structure was designed. The modular walls are not anchored to the existing architecture, ensuring flexibility and sustainability. The minimalist design, using cost-effective panel materials, makes the setup functional and easy to construct. Additionally, the walls are reusable, providing a forward-thinking solution for the city. This exhibition seamlessly blends respect for Courtens’ heritage with contemporary design and sustainable practices, enhancing Dendermonde’s cultural significance.
